The annual scientific conference for the Paediatric Rheumatology European Association (PReS) took place between the 18th and 21st of September 2021. We are delighted to announce that CLUSTER Research Assistant, Bethany Jebson, won 3rd place for best oral presentation in basic / translational medicine in the Young Investigators Meeting. a huge congratulations Beth!

Beth’s presentation was titled: ‘JIA-Uveitis – A B-cell driven disease?’

Summary:

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is characterized as joint inflammation (swelling) that lasts more than 6 weeks in under 16 year olds. It is currently unknown why some JIA patients develop the inflammatory eye disease, uveitis. Evidence suggests that a type of white blood cell, known as B-cells, may be playing a role. We compared the B-cells of JIA and JIA-Uveitis patients and saw that those with eye disease had more inflammatory characteristics.
